Church History

Some years ago two Churches in Braunton were having problems.

The Methodist Church had such a big Sunday School and Boy's & Girls Brigades that the rooms were not suitable for the requirements.
There was just not enough space to accommodate them all.

The U.R.C. were having difficulties because their Church and the buildings were in need of repair and would want a lot spent on it.

The idea was born that the 2 Churches should join together and become one.

There was a big piece of waste ground beside the U.R.C. building which belonged to them, and after much deliberation it was decided to build a New Church on that land which would jointly belong to both Churches.

It wasn't an easy task to build something that would please everyone involved but eventually a design for a new Church was submitted and agreed on.  The foundations were laid and a stone plaque was built into the wall, which read "God made two peoples into one". The day the plaque was put into place was a very happy one with a special service of celebration.  The Methodist Church was closed and the 2 congregations met in the old U.R.C while the new Church was built.  A bit of a squeeze but everyone put up with the inconvenience cheerfully enough.

The new Church was finally ready for use and the two congregations were. and still are, very happy with it.  It is a beautiful modern Church and the two congregations with some give and take really become one.

The old Church is now the hall and there are plenty of rooms available for all the needs of the Church.

Over the years Christ Church has developed into a wonderfully happy and very caring Church.  Who ever comes to Christ Church can be sure of a very warm welcome.
